I remember, it was mentioned in the excellent book 'The Three Swans' This book relates the lives of 3 generations of women in the same family. i remember a section describing the pain felt as a girl was growing up and had to have her feet bound day and night - an horrific thought!!! And for what reason, so as they appeared more attractive to men and also to restrict their ability to run away -- can you believe it!!! But because we are put in shoes at such a young age, it forces them to grow closer together. Crappy, but a lot less painful than feet being Broken then wrapped in cloth to force them to grow curled up.
