Top 10 Deadliest Creatures on earth

Posted on 13. Apr, 2007 by in Animals, General

10. Poison Dart Frog

These pint sized frogs aren’t for kissing. Their backs ooze a slimy neurotoxin that is meant to keep predators away. Each frog produces enough of the toxin to kill 10 humans.

09. Cape Buffalo

When faced with a predator, cape buffalos charge head on. That’s 1,500 pounds of beast topped off with two big, sharp horns. You’re lucky if there’s only one – the real danger comes when a herd of thousands stampedes in your direction.

08. Polar Bear

Sure they might look cuddly at the zoo, but in the wild they eat elephant seals for breakfast. Get between one and its cub and it could easily rip off your head with one swipe of its giant paw.

07. Elephant

Not every elephant is as friendly as Dumbo. Elephants kill more than 500 people a year worldwide. African elephants generally weigh in around 16,000 pounds – all the better to stomp you with – not to mention their sharp tusks.

06. Australian Saltwater Crocodile

Don’t mistake this croc for a log! It can lay still in the water, waiting for passers by. Then, in the blink of an eye, it’ll lunge at prey, pulling it under water to drown and dismember

05. African Lion

Giant fangs? Check. Lightning quick? That too. Razor sharp claws? You betcha. Hungry? You better hope not. These big cats are near perfect hunters.

04. Great White Shark

Blood in the water can excite these sharks into a feeding frenzy, where they’ll use all 3,000 of their teeth to bite anything that moves

03. Australian Box Jellyfish

lso known as the sea wasp, this salad-bowl sized jellyfish can have up to 60 tentacles each 15 feet long. Each tentacle has 5,000 stinging cells and enough toxin to kill 60 humans

02. Asian Cobra

While the Asian Cobra doesn’t hold the title of most venomous snake, it does the most with what it has. Of the 50,000 deaths by snakebite a year, Asian Cobras are responsible for the largest chunk.

01. Mosquito

Most skeeter bites just make you itch. But some mosquitoes carry and transfer malaria causing parasites. As a result, these little pests are responsible for the deaths of more than two million people a year. So The Winner is Mosquito

RACHEL Shardlow survived an encounter with “the world’s deadliest” creature” through the kindness – and the knowledge and fast action – of strangers.

The 10-year-old will be scarred for life, and may need skin grafts, after being stung by a box jellyfish, its venom burning both her legs, a forearm and part of her stomach.

But a doctor has told her mother, Ruth Macklin: “She can wear the scars with pride because she’s the survivor of a box jellyfish sting.”

Intensive care specialist Michael Corkeron said Rachel would not be alive without the help of an elderly couple who applied vinegar to the stings, preventing more venom from being injected into her. The couple have since checked up on Rachel in hospital but don’t want public credit for their life-saving actions.

“(Vinegar) stops the tentacles from stinging you more and more,” Dr Corkeron explained.

Two other bystanders performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation after her heart stopped in the family car at a service station, where her frantic parents had arranged to meet paramedics.

“By the time the ambulance got there, she had her heartbeat back and she was breathing again,” Ms Macklin said.

Rachel was swimming 23km upstream in the Calliope River , inland from Gladstone, in Central Queensland, with her brother Samuel, 12, when she was stung.

Before they went swimming, the little girl had prophetically asked her mother: “There’s nothing in here Mum, that can hurt me, like sharks or crocodiles, is there?” Marine stinger expert Lisa-Ann Gershwin said that when she read of a box jellyfish sting occurring 23km upstream, she was surprised.”

But Dr Gershwin, the natural sciences curator at the Queen Victoria Museum, in Launceston, Tasmania, said she had since learnt the Calliope River was saline to 25km and had not received much freshwater, through rain, since January.

She said 72 Australians had died from jellyfish stings since records were first kept in 1883 – 70 of them from the Chironex fleckeri jellyfish and two from the irukandji.

“A typical time to death with a box jellyfish is four minutes, but there’s been a fair few deaths at two minutes.

“It’s very, very fast,” Dr Gershwin said. “It’s the world’s deadliest animal.”

the list fails to mention humans. We’re responsible for a million times more death and destruction on this planet than every other animals on this list combined. whether you’re a fly, an elephant, or another human; a human being is the most dangerous creature you’ll ever encounter. we might not have razor sharp claws or venomous fangs, but we can be malicious, cold hearted, and sadistic. all other animals on this planet kill for food or self defense. humans kill for these reasons too, but were the only animals who do it for pleasure.

how are great white sharks on the list ? they kill two people a year if that !

  12. Stac 10 June 2011 at 7:56 am #

Hmm…I don’t like this ranking…if you base this on odds of death per incident rather than number of deaths, the mosquito is relatively harmless…I mean come on, I’ve been bit by mosquito thousands of times over my life and survived, but chances are one run in with an angry polar bear, will be my only run in…

I always used to frikken slap the mosquito away but now it’s so creepy learning about this. BUT I LOVE JAGUARS THOUGH! =D Who ever wondered a little bug so small can be more dangerous than a 700 pound animal that normally attacks? Wow.
