From Egg to Chick

Can you imagine the progress from an egg to a chick? It’s amazing to see such progress in pictures. I hope they are not too disgusted to viewers. This is not what we usually seen on tv or magizines.

As I know, only the content of the egg cannot give birth for the chix.

  3. ati

wow! amazing pics! thanks for the post!

  4. Xaxa

Nice, 19 killed chix for 1 shown. Hope you screwed him after for guts picture?

  5. Maxim Kharkov-Ukraine

How can I eat eggs after I see these pictures :(

  6. Dn!S

I suggest you try the same thing you always did

that is putting it in your mouth…

  7. rob

its too bad that the chick on the last photo is being slauthered at such a horrific way that it is even more “disgusting” than the beautiful lifecycle above

  8. fred

omg pathetic greenpeace nerds just eat your fucking chicken humans are made to DOMINATE this earth, we’re top of the food chain so we will have to eat. Eat meat because it is good for you.

  9. Rob

Well greenpeace is over reacting in allot of ways, but it is because they need to make the world aware of this. nice pics though, allthoughi didnt wana c those chicks die. maybe next time you will put that on top of the list.

Amazing! I just wish they had placed the day of develpment for the embryos, that is the only thing that would make this better.

  12. evermann

man, i do love those eggs….I’m hungry

  13. John

How was this done? everyone’s assuming it ’s a different egg cracked at each stage of development, but presumably if you carefully took off the shell and incubated the contents you could achieve something like this…

As for the “I-can’t-eat-eggs-now”: did you really not know that’s what they were? really?

  14. sandie

Since you like photos of this nature how about going back to the beginning of your life in the womb and have someone to make photos such as this to show your mother and father….maybe then you can understand just how hard hearted a person has to be to do this and plaster it on the internet for the world to see…you just might need a little help here.Have you thought about that?

  15. robert

Well, my son was right. I thought the yellow part was the chicken, turns out to be the white. I guess I will have to tell him he was not crazy after all.

For those of you scream at the poster for the pictures, did you not take science in school? Did you not get the opportunity to dissect the frog, pig, cat? Did you think that someones pet was found on the street one day and became your science class project? Okay, maybe not a pet, but in the name of science, things like this happen every day! As noted under the first image “I hope they are not too disgusted to viewers. This is not what we usually seen on tv or magizines.” you do not see this on a daily basis and you do not think about the fact that science does this often. Plus, if this gets to you - will the process of aborting a baby get you up in arms?

  16. robert

    amazing pictures
and to all you people that are getting mad over this:
    straighten your priorities!
why would anybody give a fudge over some stupid chicken what with all the human suffering going on now?

  17. Nitin

I luv eggs n chicken but these pics made me sad :( Now I wil eat just one egg or maybe 2 daily thats it….. OK an occasional of 3-4 a day but that’s all. I am doing this only cuz I feel bad after seeing these pics.

sandie, on May 16th, 2007 at 5:54 am

hey i think they did do that thing with the chick for a human. havent you heard of a little show called in the womb?

plus i dont understand why people take things too seriously, hey there are worse things on the net then a picture of how a creature is born.

have you ever heard of rotten.com? i refuse to go that site because of how gross it is.

but hey i think ur just a bit off the wall to be telling people how to think, im just throwing a suggestion out there. take it or leave it.

  19. Aaron

Yeah…I have to agree with robert on this one, its not the abortion of baby chicks that should get you all crazy for some ransacking of corporate science in America. I think that the abortion of babies should make you sick, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think abortion is a good idea in some cases, just not when last nights party got out of hand, and now you have this “extra baggage” and need someone with a coat hanger to do you good on the whole “imma party like I got no womb” mentality.

  20. Sudha

19 embryos were killed for the sake of this photo series! Yuck.

Zoology was one of my subjects in college and in my sophomore year studying development of the chick embro was part of the syllabus. Seeing these pictures brought back those days and the sick feeling that I lived with. It was one of the reasons that I gave up Zoology.

  21. Teri

    “This is disgusting”

  22. Ashley

Do u people eat chicken??? I’m betting most of u have eaten more than 19 chickens in u’r lifetime……guess what!! That means that u killed just as many chickens for u’r dinner as they did for this show if not waaaay more. Quit bitching! If u dont like it, don’t look at it.

  23. Sayne

What they did here is save 19 chickens from growing to the point that they would be able to feel the sting of the cleaver as their little chicken heads are hacked off. All I see here is a waste of food, those eggs could have fed starving ethiopians, or the chickens they grew up to become could have been turned into delicious chicken nuggets, and added to another 50 americans’ obesity levels!

  24. LeoZ

wow. grow up. wanna go back to the dark ages? i have spent portions of my life as vegetarian. for life to be respected, it must be understood. every time you wash your hands with soap you kill something living. where do you draw the line? try to see the beauty in things for frick’s sake.

  25. mark

1, great pics, thanks for sharing.
2, if this series of photos was taken by killing 19 chickens and you this this was disgusting then you probably missed to recognize Kentucky Fried Chicken at the corner. Which means you stupid :-)
3, having the first post and announce it doesn’t harm anyone (although it is barely for fun) but saying something like “First! Ooooohhh, you were first, fantastic, your family will be so proud of you. You sick loser! ” means that you are depressed and trolling on a forum. You need to vote YES on light drugs and you should take marijuana daily.
4, “DOMINATE this earth” LOL. You are funny. Please learn some grammar before you try to dominate Earth. Thank you :)))))

And you who think you can’t eat chicken/egg any more: do not worry. You eat those eggs which are not in this state of development (well, accidents can happen but you have 1e-10 chance :) so relax and get the nutrition.

I personally think these photos are nice and excellent for kids to understand how the living things formed.

  26. Mol

It’s the study of reproduction here that is interesting as well as the over the top emotion it subsequently encountered.

This was in no way cruel nor painful for the embyos involved. It is a reasonable investigation carried out well.

No emotion should be involved with a humane scientific study.

Perhaps these arguements would be more effective against the outrageous and blatent attrocities that happen in US occupied Iran and Iraq?

Well done on the O study here, I say.

  27. R. Narayanan

All those righteous people who expressed disgust and horror forget that pharmaceutical manufacturers use a lot of animals for testing the drugs on them, and that medical and biological researchers use a lot of birds and animals for their tests and experiments.

For my part, I should say that no motive or character analysis is to be attributed to comment on a Post like this.

We are seeing so much slaughter, murder and carnage around us that it is surprising to note people make a mountain out of a molehill.

  28. Petey Pablo

    Great pictures!

And stop bullshitting about 19 chickens that died. Those ants u killed while standing on the grass isn’t a problem right :P…or that tree that is used for firewood? Long live science

great pictures. can i link it on my blog, please?

  30. Alicia

Inés, yes you may. just link back here. Thanks.

  31. Jennifer

Do any of the complainers even KNOW that we don’t eat fertilized eggs? Chickens lay unfertilized eggs when exposed to the right light. Not eating eggs because of the baby chicken in side is like telling a woman every time she has a period she is murdering a baby…

    sigh.

    Science is hard.

  32. StreetDude

The cycle is not complete…here’s the continuation..

1.The day old chick is gutted.
2.Place in boiling water to remove the day old hair.
    3.Salted and peppered then floured.
    4.Deep Fried
5.Then dunked in either sweet or hot sauce.
    6. Then eaten…come to Manila it’s Street Food!!!

  33. Christine

Ok, all you stupid earth geeks. Get over it. We as human are ment to eat meat. It has been part of our life since caveman days. Yes somethings that man has done for the sake of man kind might be morally wrong, but the thing is we would not be were we are if we had not experimented with things.

The pictures above show a wonderful thing. The development of life. It is a chicken. I know I eat lots of chicken. I have a very soft heart when it come to soft fuzzy things, but I also can look at the pictures with a open mind. It is meat to see the stages and I would gladly show my 5 and 6 year old them. They are well done.

As for those that say they cant eat eggs ever again, go back and look at your biology books. It takes a female and a male to make a baby. The chicken that produce the eggs you eat live in a warehouse were they are kept away from males. They are fed and thier only job is to lay eggs. Now if you eat farm eggs, you never know what you may get.

Get a life, grow up and eat your protien. It’s good for you.

  34. BioBaum

I did something like this during zoology-studies on embryology but after 10 days I had to stop because of Germany’s laws on animal-experiments.
Nice to see, how it looks day 11-21.

Contributing to the moral discussion, I am not a vegetarian and I’m aware of the fact that these are only 20 chicken - nothing compared to the billions we slaughter every month - but I admit that I had some displeasing feelings in my belly after opening the day-8-10-eggs.

  35. Maykat

These pictures are amazing. When I was in fourth grade we hatched and raised baby chickens. I only wish I could have seen each stage of development back then. I am really very glad to see these pictures.

  36. Cheryl

Surprised to see there are still so many people out there who think we have to eat meat to be healthy. Quite frankly, I believe the way we treat animals shows a great deal about us, usually not good.

This isn’t science, this is somebody’s idea about taking pictures to gross people out and gain attention. How chickens develop in the embryo has been known for decades. Nothing new here, including complete disregard for life.

You can’t create it, you have no business ending it.

  37. Mol

I am fascinated by the responses.

I never considered that the development of an chicken’s embryo was attention seeking.

Nor did I consider that just because I know how it happens, that children (who should be taught about the development of mulitple cell organisms) would somehow already appreciate something they have yet to see to comprehend. Let’s be honest, it is NOT gruesome, it is very mild and innocent.

Further to correct an innacurracy, man CAN create life (pro-create) and with statements being made (such as), “You can’t create it, you have no business ending it,” isn’t the reverse statement really the one being made? That’s ironic and very frightening, and it is the mentality that has (currently) got America into Iraq in the first place.

I applaud (again) the efforts made here to show the progress of egg to chicken. And the progress, whether intentional or not, of a most revealing forum.

I’d consider doing a whole other “behind the scenes” study of this, if I were you!

    Cheers.

  38. Edi

I don’t know how many of you will read this far but:
First, I’m guessing these chickens were dead before they were cracked out of their eggs. They look pretty lifeless and at the same time untouched. Those who raise chickens often check eggs to find ones that are dead, which is done with lights.
Second: Your grocery store eggs are usually unfertilized, which was said above. Female chickens produce eggs even if they are not exposed to a male, therefor the egg has no chicken in it. Sometimes you’ll get one with a spot of red, but just throw it out, thats why you always crack your eggs in a separate bowl first.

  39. Squeezle

What a buncha tards. Don’t you realize the eggs you eat ever day aren’t fertilized? They will never grow to be anything other than food. Or a good bomb for the treehuggin morons that abound these day. I heard an omelette calling my name.

  40. n00b

for all the retards posting comments about how insensitive the person who took the pictures is, go fuck yourself.

    have a nice day.

  41. wtf, lol

how could someone possibly be offended by that?

this is where life comes from, dumbasses.

  42. The Junky's Wife

    That was amazing…

  43. crazy...

Just to continue on what Edi said about the red stop on the eggs…

The red spot in no way means a chicken is going to hatch. It is just a blood spot that forms in the uterus of the hen. You can also get “meat spots”. But that isn’t a baby chicken either that is just a part of the repro tract that came off during formation of an egg. So go ahead and get all mad about these chicks being real chicks (whatever) but the ones you eat are not going to be nor will they ever be chickens. And any bad spots you get in ur eggs, while they are undesirable will not hurt you and are not baby chicks. So even if ur a veg. you can still eat eggs… unless ur crazy and don’t eat any animal products.

  44. Caroline

I dont know why all you guys are up in arms about eating eggs now, people complain about this and yet still eat battery eggs. The majority off eggs people eat would never turn into a chick anyway

  45. molex

That’s great! Now I know where all that delicious chicken meat comes from. BTW I don’t eat eggs, I just toss a dozen down my garbage disposal every morning and laugh at the crying hippies. Oh, then I fire up all 3 of my SUV’s and just let them idle in my drive way for 2 or 3 hours, sometimes with a brick on the gas peddle. And then I eat 1/3rd of a steak for lunch, throw the rest away and laugh because I know some smelly hippie’s hacky sack just went in the gutter.

Enviro-dopes, shut up. It’s an egg, not a symbol.

  46. Ash

Hey maxim- you ask how you can eat eggs after this. Easily. The eggs you get from stores are unfertilized. The chickens lay eggs even if they haven’t been fertilized. So we eat them.

Why are people getting so bent out of shape over the eggs? They’re just eggs, and a life or not, the chicken was probably either going to be slaughtered anyway or put in a tiny cage to produce eggs for the rest of his or her life. It’s no big deal.

I’ve always been curious about the stages of a chicken forming — These are awesome pictures. Absolutely beautiful. I always thought that the yolk spawned the chick, but now I see differently. :) Thanks for opening my eyes!

To the rest of you complaining, you really need to lighten up. What does going back to the time of your birth have anything to do with a chicken? Jeeze. Stuff it, guys.

I hope you people know that all of the embryos are now dead. He most likely cracked eggs of known age into a petri dish, and then took a photo. If it were possible to do this, it would be a standard science class experiment.

The ‘artist’ should step forward with his admission of what methods he used for these pictures.

  65. Kizza

Have you seen the way they slaughter farm animals to put on the dinner plate? The chickens in these photos could have been dead already, for all we know. As said somewhere above, the eggs in incubation are often checked for life, and if they aren’t developing, they are discarded. Why not learn a little about the miracle of life while you’re at it?

Before you get on your high horse about the preservation of life, please consider other possibilities. Also realize that the use of embryonic research can save more lives than it destroys. Embryonic experiments in virology by Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet (a world renowned scientist, who actually went to my primary school, and grew up in the town I live in) worked to develop a vaccine to save many species of bird subject to the canarypox avipox virus. He did this through embyonic experimentation, something you all seem to hate.

Science is not the enemy, experiments like this not only satiate our curiosity, but are used for the benefit of living creatures. Would you rather canarypox kill tens of thousands of birds, or have Sir Burnet carefully use as many as he needed to develop cures and save the rest of the bird population?

The same goes for human embryonic research. Would you rather a human ovum discarded from IVF harvests be burnt/stored indefinitely as biological waste? Or would you rather that life that would have otherwise been sacrificed needlessly go on to do greater things, such as be responsible for the cure of cancer, or stem cell therapy to remedy multiple sclerosis that affects so many more lives today. And so many other life threatening and debilitating diseases and illnesses that plague a great percentage of the world’s population. People are dying every day, needlessly.

If you view it in that light, embryonic research is the lesser of two evils when it comes to needlessly discarding life as opposed to learning from God’s greatest creation in hopes that we might make a better place of His world.

  66. Bob Howdy

Good work with these pictures, don’t listen to the hypocrites about “killing” chickens, as if they’ve been vegetarians their whole lives.

  67. Odin Dax

Yes, you can eat eggs again! The difference between an egg that we eat and an egg hosting a one-day chick is that the eggs we eat aren’t FERTILIZED!!!!! Chicken farms don’t keep roosters roaming around! Geez…

  68. Flaunt

lol yeah guys.. erm, i dunno why you guys are assuming 19 chicks were killed opposed to just one.. and look! he lived! for all we know hes making babies as we speak, so stop bitching. Im going to agree with Odin Dax, the eggs we eat arent fertilized, chickens just lay eggs… which cant hatch because the there was no rooster! do you think that for every egg, a chicken and a rooster had some fun? nah… you guys came to this site, your fault for being disturbed, which i duno why you would, its life.. weak stomach? there was a fair warning at the beginning.

  69. Amanda

Life cycles have always seemed like such an amazing thing, then I saw this. It’s too bad the poor defenseless chickens were sacrificed. Hopefully, this can be used as a teaching method so it isn’t a total waste.

It will be a while before I am able to eat eggs again.

  70. THM

The end product certainly looks more delicious!

  71. SpikeSpiegel

Yum-Yum, chicken and/or eggs for breakfast. For every animal you don’t eat I’ll eat 3.

  74. Chri$

I don’t think this is disgusting, I think that it is a part of an animal’s lifecycle that we rarely get to see. I don’t agree with the people that say that we are made to dominate this Earth, that is pure ignorance and arrogance. I am not a vegeterian, but I respect your right to choose what you eat. I believe that it is both disgusting and disturbing, how animals are slaughtered, but since I can do nothing to prevent their death by not eating the products, I do not attempt to boycott the companies in this way. If you do, though, more power to you, I hope that you make an impact.

  75. Bob

The christian right object to this because they are against science and exposes them. it cost so many new lives to show this sequence. Of course they have no feeling how this shortsightedness also relects on the being ok with all the death and destruction being heaped on the world by the deciders stupidity.

But these are truly great and very educational pics, thanks for posting them.

  76. Anaïs

    Hi!
Those picts are wonderful …are they in the public domain or on a specific copyright ? Can I use them on my website ?
    Thanks for sharing !!!

  77. Paul

    Excellent!

  78. David

1 - this can be done in a lab without causing the embryo to die. We had several chicks incubated and grown without the shell. They all lived and went to a petting zoo after the study was complete.
2 - in human arrogance one might think it’s just a chicken, but death to satisfy one’s curiosity remains gross no matter the subject.
3 - Just because some scientist do this do you? (just because some people jump of a bridge, do you?)

    I like pigs.
    Dogs look up to us.
    Cats look down on us.
    Pigs treat us as equals.
    -Winston Churchill

imho the species on this planet deserving the least amount of respect is us.

On a brighter note, sweet images nonetheless, I just hope you did this properly without causing the loss of chicks. (keep the outer membrane intact while removing the shell and keep the sac from drying out, the embryo should still grow fine in an incubator if this is done.)

  79. Charles

Unless you shop from a real rustic, super old-fashioned farm, and even most of those shine them through some sort of light to make sure there are no chicks. Also, I can’t believe that you idiots bicker about being vegetarian when what you should be bickering about is religion. Aaaand… FIGHT!

These pictures are wonderful! I am going to be raising some chickens for meat and eggs next spring, and it’s great to see how they develop.

I have to say that the furor from the PETA-esque contingent is pretty humorous, also, considering the horrific lives most chickens lead after they hatch, at least in the USA. Letting the chick survive beyond hatching is not really a kindness.

  98. Tiger

Don’t you guys know, that the breakfast eggs you usually eat never had or would have chicks in them? I dunno how it works but chickens on farms lay eggs without ever to have seen a rooster, what makes chicks impossible ;)

  99. ss

we have chicks @ our school and i had a duck!!!!

Come on people is this really something to fight about,i mean you can do this if your exetremly carful, that way the chick want get hurt. All you have to do is take the top part of the shell off and like i said before if your exetremly carful you wont do the chick any harm.

  108. lily fer

  109. rocky123

Why be upset? It’s a farmer’s right to choose.

  110. jacky

    horrible!! killers!!!

  111. Haley

wow. why would you kill all these chicks just for pictures to put on some website?? thats just dumb. be a little bit considerate and think about how the chicks feel. a little chick that was not able to even see the outside world. so you just rip open their shell and take pictures??? thats low.

  112. Chickachickaboomboom

I am actullay working on a incubator project for school to see if I can hatch chicks.

  113. Monica

I think these picture are GREAT! I have been having trouble with my 4 year old son trying to explain to him why he can’t tear down every next he finds in a tree, especially when they have baby bird eggs in them. I know this is going to be extreemly helpful for us.

For those of you who have issues with this, get over it! I know there has to be more than just me out there who find this extreemly helpful.

  114. Ethan

I injooyed seeing baby chiks hatch.

  115. icecuba

yeah, they destroy each year several million male chicken, because only the female are needed for the egg production.
I believe this photos are relatively harmless compared to our sick food-production industry..

  116. Lauren

this is aaahdorable when the baby is actually out of the egg it is soooooo cute!!

To all those dissing the poster. You probably eat at KFC. That should disgust you. They pluck the chickens and put them in boiling water while they’re still alive. and McDonalds. People sell unsellable chickens to McDonalds, and then they cram the edible meat into the mold of their chicken nuggets. The pictures above (or below, whichever case this is) are just of the formation of a little chick. It isn’t disgusting, it’s a part of life. Please get over it. Thanks for the pics poster, i was always confused about this(: Now I know.

  128. Sharazad

    This is so beautiful.
I am a vegetarian and I eat unfertilized eggs all the time.

Also, it’s possible to take pictures of the chick in the egg without killing it. It’s also possible to get detailed real-time pictures of humans in the womb. Its called a 4D sonogram

  129. Darla

Thanks for the pictures. I found it very educational.

  130. victoria flores

  131. O-dawg

We are soft. We eat meat, eggs, milk etc. but since we buy them at the store, we are able to live with denial of where they come from.

There is nothing wrong with killing animals for food. That is the natural cycle of life - which most of know of, but have never truely experienced.

Living with a denial of death is living with a denial of life.

  132. __NITTA__

  141. hello

i dont think i can eat eggs anymore -_- im gonna feel so bad.

  142. Jennifer

when a chicken lays an egg it is not a baby chicken it is an unfertilized egg, for it to become a chicken the rooster has to spray the egg with its sperm. and who really cares about this when little unborn baby humans are being brutally murdered
